Stock Market Yoga
Today I called the brokerage company where I’ve held some of my retirement savings too see what the hold up was.
About 6 weeks ago I requested they transfer my savings to my account at another company.
They still hadn’t done it.
And, as it would happen, one stock holding had dropped by about 50% since I first asked them to sell it and transfer the money to my new account. (Yikes!)
Apparently they needed “proper” authorization from me and had mailed a request…. to my old address – not the address of record. Ugggh!
They had my phone number and never bothered calling. No email either.
Part of me wanted to get irate. But I was able to “step back” and notice that.
I was able to observe that part of me was frustrated and wanted to take it out on the nice lady on the other end of the line.
Not to say that I handled the call perfectly but I was pleasant, listened to her and gave the approval needed for them to transfer the funds.
I mentioned that I was disappointed, but did so without the rapid heart rate, muscle tension and “hot head” that probably would have accompanied this phone call if it had happened a few years ago.
Which brings me to my point.
The simple thing I did here was observe – my feelings, my behavior… my reaction – before I let it consume me and control me.
Not that I didn’t have negative feelings and a desire to blame someone…
Not that I handled the situation in some ideal fashion…
But to the best of my ability part of me was watching what was going on.
In the previous post I suggested noticing when you’re stressed out and when your calm.
One reason is basic data collection – to start to notice your patterns.
The other is that your awareness alone can bring about more productive action and a more calm, peaceful state.
So keep noticing how you react to the world around you. And to the world inside you.

And let the awareness go beyond yourself - be aware of what the others are feeling, the tone of their voice, the difficulty of their job. You’ll be amazed at the response you get.
And you may be amazed at your response… Many emotional problems can be significantly reduced by getting beyond yourself and thinking of and observing others.
