You
really can revolutionize your health with a well tailored daily 15-20
minute yoga practice you do yourself at home but the real secret is
to get in the habit of doing a daily yoga practice.
Many
people will never do a yoga sequence outside of an arranged yoga
class.
Your yoga experience is transformed when you practice
on your own.
You take ownership. You can use yoga as a
healing or relaxation tool whenever you want. You're taking
responsibility for your own practice.
You see yoga as
something you can integrate yourself into your daily life.
And
the more often you practice the deeper the affect it will have on
you.
So how do you get into the habit of doing your
own custom designed yoga practice every day.
The biggest
secret when you start out is to understand that it takes 21 days to
form a new habit.
Imagine you have a wastepaper basket on the
left side of your desk and you move it to the right side of your
desk.
For the first day or two whenever you throw out a piece
of paper you'll subconsciously go to throw that paper into the bin on
the left.
You'll have to consciously STOP yourself from
throwing your garbage on the floor and throw it into the wastepaper
bin that's now on the right side of your desk.
After a week or
so you'll throw some of the paper in the right direction but your
subsconscious will still want to throw that paper to the left.
But
after 21 days you'll have a new habit and you'll be throwing your
paper into the wastepaper basket on the right side of your desk
without thinking about it.
It's the same when you
start your daily yoga practice at home.
You'll forget to do a
practice you intended to do in the morning or you'll go to do your
practice and realize you have to make an important phone call or bake
a cake or any number of other distractions.
If you persist on
doing some kind of personal practice EVERY day you'll find after a
week it begins to feel natural.
After two weeks your body
begins to look forward to your daily practice.
After three
weeks you feel like there's something desperately wrong if you miss a
practice.
The real secret to making a daily practice
work for you is to be aware of your body, your mind and your emotions
as you practice and adapt your practice to suit.
You may do
some very short 5-10 minute sessions on some days and on some days
you might spend a lot longer relaxing in the final shavasana stage of
your practice.
Remember the secret is to work with your body,
your mind and your emotions.
You're trying to tailor your
practice to suit where you're at each day NOT force your body to
conform to a practice that may not be suitable at that particular
moment.
So get into the HABIT of doing some kind of yoga
practice every day – no matter how short - and be kind to yourself.
Tailor each day's practice to the way your body feels, your
mind and your emotions.
